Well now, folks, it’s been a mighty long time comin’, but ol’ Tim Mickelson has decided it’s time to hang up his bag and call it quits after a good ol’ run as a caddie for his brother, Phil. Yep, you heard right. Tim’s packin’ it in after many years of helpin’ Phil out there on the green. Ain’t it somethin’ when family sticks together like that? I reckon it ain’t too common these days, but they sure did make a good team, the Mickelsons.
Now, Tim’s been at it for a good while. Some say it all started back in June 2017, when Tim took over after Phil and his long-time caddie, Jim “Bones” Mackay, decided to part ways. I can’t rightly say what went on between them, but I reckon sometimes folks just drift apart, even after all them years. But anyhow, Tim stepped right in and started walkin’ those courses alongside his brother, and I tell ya, they sure had some great runs. Tim got to witness Phil win eight of them 57 worldwide tournaments, includin’ a big one—the 2021 PGA Championship where Phil became the oldest major champion at age 50! Now, that’s somethin’ to write home about.
Tim, well, he wasn’t just carryin’ Phil’s clubs. Oh no. He was there in the thick of things, helpin’ his brother stay focused when things started goin’ sideways. Y’see, Tim had a way of settin’ Phil’s mind right, gettin’ him back on track when he’d start driftin’. I reckon that’s what makes a good caddie, not just knowin’ the clubs and all, but knowin’ the person they’re workin’ for—bein’ there when they need a hand or a word of encouragement. And that’s what Tim did best. He helped Phil stay sharp, and lord knows that’s no easy task with all them distractions.
But now, Tim’s decided it’s time to step back and spend more time with his family. Ain’t that a fine reason to retire? Ain’t nobody can blame him for wantin’ to take it easy and enjoy the rest of his days without runnin’ all over the country. And, if you ask me, he’s earned it. A long career, a lot of wins, and a lot of respect. It’s not every day you get to walk beside a champion like Phil, and Tim did it with grace and dedication.
Now, I reckon Phil’s got to go find him a new caddie. That’s the tough part of this whole thing. It ain’t easy replacin’ someone who’s been with you through thick and thin. But Phil’s got to do what he’s got to do, and word is, he’s been lookin’ at a feller named Jon Yarbrough. Yarbrough’s been caddyin’ for Scott Stallings, and who knows, maybe he’ll be the right fit for Phil. But y’see, it’s always hard replacin’ someone who’s been by your side all them years. It’s like findin’ a new pair of shoes—they’ve got to fit just right.
But don’t go thinkin’ that Tim’s disappearin’ into the woodwork. Nope. He’ll still be around. Maybe not on the greens, but he’ll be around. Family’s important, and Tim’s sure got a lot to be proud of in his career. And I reckon he’ll be sittin’ back, enjoyin’ the memories, and spendin’ time with them that matter most to him now.
So here’s to Tim Mickelson, a feller who’s given a lot to the game of golf, and to his brother Phil. They made a mighty good team, and I don’t reckon anybody will forget what they accomplished together. Good luck to Tim on his retirement, and good luck to Phil as he moves on with a new caddie. It’s a new chapter for both of ’em, and I’m sure it’ll be somethin’ worth watchin’.
