The Mystery of Andrew Waterman: Why Yasir Al-Rumayyan Used a Pseudonym at the Dunhill Links
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Well now, folks, I gotta tell ya, there’s somethin’ mighty peculiar goin’ on in the world of golf these days. There’s this feller, Andrew Waterman, who shows up at some fancy golf events, like that Alfred Dunhill Links Championship over in St. Andrews, Scotland. But here’s the thing—ain’t no one really knows who this Andrew Waterman is! Ain’t no one from the golf world ever heard of him before. Turns out, this “Waterman” ain’t no regular golfer at all. Nope, it’s actually a fella named Yasir Al-Rumayyan, and he’s got a lot of money, power, and influence.

The Mystery of Andrew Waterman: Why Yasir Al-Rumayyan Used a Pseudonym at the Dunhill Links

Now, you might be wonderin’, what in the world is goin’ on? Why would a big shot like him be playin’ under a fake name? Well, the answer ain’t all that simple. You see, Yasir Al-Rumayyan is the governor of the Public Investment Fund in Saudi Arabia, and he’s also the chairman of Newcastle United, that football club across the ocean. And when it comes to big golf tournaments like the Alfred Dunhill Links, he’s tryin’ to keep a low profile, probably ‘cause folks might not take too kindly to him showin’ up with all his power and money in tow. So, instead of puttin’ his real name on the board, he shows up as Andrew Waterman, just like he did last year.

Now, you might be thinkin’, well, who cares what name he’s usin’, right? It’s all about the golf, ain’t it? Well, there’s a bit more to it than that. This here tournament, the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, is a big deal. It’s where the rich and famous, and the best of the best in golf, come together to play. And for someone like Al-Rumayyan, it’s a way to mix in without attractin’ too much attention. But of course, as soon as people found out that Andrew Waterman was really him, well, that’s when things started stirrin’ up.

Last year, Al-Rumayyan showed up at this same event with a couple of other big names. He was teein’ off alongside folks like Martin Slumbers, the CEO of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, and pro golfer Peter Uihlein. But even though the man had all that high-powered company, it was clear as day that he wasn’t just another golfer tryin’ to win a trophy. Nah, he was playin’ for the fun of it, just tryin’ to be part of the scene.

It’s funny though, isn’t it? When you think of golf, you think of folks like Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, or Phil Mickelson. You don’t think about billionaires hidin’ behind fake names just to enjoy the game. But that’s the world we live in now, where big names and big egos show up and play their games, both on and off the green.

But let’s not get too carried away. Al-Rumayyan ain’t the only one out there playin’ under a false name. In fact, last year, there was a whole bunch of LIV Golf folks in that tournament too. Now, LIV Golf is a whole ‘nother can of worms, and some folks still don’t know what to make of it. But what’s clear is that this here championship ain’t just about the sport—it’s about politics, money, and influence. The game of golf might be all about swingin’ clubs and puttin’ balls in holes, but behind the scenes, it’s about dealin’, negotiation, and all sorts of business that us regular folks don’t see.

And so, this year, Al-Rumayyan’s back at the tournament again, though this time, there ain’t no Andrew Waterman on the list no more. As soon as the tournament kicked off, the name Waterman disappeared, and out popped the real deal: Yasir Al-Rumayyan. But don’t go thinkin’ this is the end of it. Nah, he’ll probably be back next year, and the year after that, too. It’s a whole new way of doin’ things, and as long as folks keep watchin’, these big names will keep showin’ up, with or without a pseudonym.

So, if you’re ever watchin’ a big golf tournament like the Alfred Dunhill Links, and you see a name you don’t recognize, don’t be too quick to judge. It might just be someone playin’ in disguise, tryin’ to stay outta the spotlight while still enjoyin’ the game. That’s the way of the world now, and it don’t look like it’s changin’ anytime soon.
