Okay, here’s my take on sharing my “basketball g.o.a.t” practice journey, blog style!

My Basketball G.O.A.T Journey: From Zero to (Hopefully) Hero
Alright guys, so I’ve been on this crazy mission lately: to seriously up my basketball game. Not just like, “shoot a few hoops at the park” level, but actually get good. Like, maybe, just maybe, approach something resembling the g.o.a.t. level… okay, maybe that’s a stretch, but you gotta aim high, right?
It all started pretty simple. I was watching some old Michael Jordan highlights (who isn’t, right?) and it just hit me – I wanted that feeling. That drive. That… airness. So, I started with the basics.
First things first, I dusted off my old basketball. It was looking pretty sad in the garage, covered in cobwebs. Gave it a good scrub, pumped it up, and it felt…okay. But I knew I needed a proper ball if I was serious. So, I headed to the sports store and picked up a new Spalding NBA official game ball. Felt good in my hands instantly.
Next up, I hit the court. Found a decent outdoor court near my place – a bit cracked, but hey, it’s got a hoop. I started with just dribbling. Sounds boring, I know, but I was terrible. Couldn’t keep the ball under control for more than two seconds. So, I spent a solid hour just dribbling with my right hand, then my left, then alternating. Man, my arms were burning.
Then, I moved onto shooting. Layups first. I was bricking everything. I focused on my form: knees bent, eyes on the target, follow through. Slowly, very slowly, I started to get a little better. I set a goal: make 10 layups in a row from both sides before I could move on. Took me way longer than I’d like to admit.
After layups, I tried some free throws. Same thing – terrible. I watched some YouTube videos on free throw technique. Paid attention to the little things: stance, breathing, release point. Practiced my routine until it felt natural. Still not amazing, but definitely improved.
I knew I needed to work on my conditioning too. Running up and down the court was killer. I started adding sprints to my practice sessions. I also started running a few miles a couple times a week. Gotta build up that stamina.
I also started watching a lot of basketball – not just highlights, but full games. Paid attention to how the pros moved, how they created space, how they anticipated passes.
I even joined a local rec league. Got completely destroyed in my first game, but it was a good learning experience. I realized I needed to work on my defense and my passing.
I’m still not even close to being a G.O.A.T, obviously. But I’m making progress. It’s a long road, but I’m enjoying the journey.
Here’s what I’ve been doing consistently:
- Daily Dribbling Drills: 30 minutes every day, focusing on control and hand switching.
- Shooting Practice: At least an hour, 3-4 times a week. Layups, free throws, and jump shots.
- Conditioning: Running and sprints a few times a week.
- Game Film Study: Watching pro games and analyzing player movements.
- Rec League Games: Playing and learning from each game.
It’s tough, but I’m sticking with it. Maybe one day I’ll be able to pull off a fadeaway jumper like MJ. A guy can dream, right? I’ll keep you all updated on my progress. Wish me luck!
