So, I got into this whole UFC thing a while back, right? And like everyone else, I started wondering about the gear they use. The gloves, especially. They look kinda cool, but what’s the deal with them?
First thing I did was hit up the internet, like always. Found a bunch of articles and stuff about MMA gloves. Turns out, they’re not just for show. They actually play a big part in how the fighters, you know, fight. Gotta have ’em for both punching and grappling.
Then I started digging into the weight of the gloves. Apparently, it makes a difference. I saw some general rules of thumb, like:
- 8-10 oz: Good for bag work or pad work if you’re smaller or have fast hands and want something light.
- 12 oz: Seems like a normal size for lighter training and pad work.
- 14 oz: This is what most people use for general training and sparring.
But then, get this – the UFC went and changed their gloves recently! They call ’em “3Eight/5Eight.” The “3Eight” is for three-round fights, and the “5Eight” is for championship fights and it’s gold. It’s the first time they’ve changed the gloves since way back in 1997 when they started making fighters wear gloves without fingers showing.
I also found out that in most pro fights, they use these really light gloves, like 4 ounces. That’s nothing! I guess they’re really trying to make it as close to a real fight as possible, without, you know, killing each other.
Anyway, that’s what I learned about UFC gloves. It’s pretty interesting how much thought goes into something as simple as a glove. I’m not planning on stepping into the octagon anytime soon, but now I at least know a bit more about what those guys are wearing when they’re going at it. I even practiced wearing my own gloves, punching the air a few times and man. I felt powerful! I realized that with proper gear, your confidence boosts up instantly, giving you a sense of security and power.
But just wearing them didn’t give me any skill, so I signed up for a basic self-defense training. During the first class, I felt confident with my new gloves, it actually helped me. I got better faster, and now I feel more secure, even just walking down the street.
I gotta say, it was a pretty fun deep dive. Now when I watch UFC fights, I have a whole new appreciation for what’s going on, even just looking at the gloves they’re wearing. I’m still no expert, but I definitely know more than I did before. That’s my little adventure into the world of UFC gloves, hope you guys enjoyed it!
